Here are the top five stories today in Woodstock-Towne Lake:
- If you're a college student looking for an internship this summer, the Cherokee County Community Development Agency may have an opportunity for you. The part-time internship is a paid position, and the student will be helping to develop Cherokee County's Accessory Dwelling Unit ordinance. The perfect fit will be a graduate student pursuing a master's degree in public administration, planning, architecture or public policy and will have an interest in working with the local government. The intern will work up to 29 hours a week from roughly June 1 to August 11. Please see further details at the link, including information on applying. (Cherokee County Communications Division)
- A well loved and respected Woodstock resident, Mike Kinsey, sadly passed away last week, less than a month after he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Kinsey was a spiritual man and he had been a Christian educator since 1983, most recently a Bible school teacher at Fellowship Christian School in Roswell. Everyone in the Kinseys’ circle was devastated by his passing, Fellowship Christian School canceled last Monday's classes to allow students and co-workers time to grieve. Mike Kinsey's wife Cecille is left to handle the bulk of bills, so to help, their son Trent started a GoFundMe to help raise money to pay for medical bills, the funeral cost and other needs. If you'd like to donate, you can do so here. They have raised just over half the goal to date. (Woodstock-Towne Lake Patch)
- Student members of the Etowah High School's HOSA Future Health Professionals chapter won first place in the HOSA state competition this month. The team's win was for a public service announcement they created to highlight mental health awareness, which you can see here. They'll now head to the HOSA International Leadership Conference in Texas this summer to compete at the national level, and they will be recognized for their win by the Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian V. Hightower in a future school board meeting. Congratulations team! (CCSD News)
- Northside Cherokee has a very interesting and informative display this week at the hospital. To shed light on the need for colorectal cancer screening and in conjunction with National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, the hospital is displaying a giant, walk-through colon showing various health conditions as you make your way through. It is suggested that anyone over the age of 45 should be screening for cancer regularly as part of their health routine. You can read more about the hospital's colorectal cancer program here. Be sure to talk to your primary care physician about any concerns and get your screening scheduled! (Subscription: Cherokee Tribune & Ledger-News)
- The deadline to apply for a Community Impact Grant from the Service League of Cherokee County is next week. The Service League will be awarding $30,000 in total to other local organizations that "work to remove barriers and enable children to grow, learn, and prosper..." If your idea or project is something you believe will help our local children, you can reach out via the Service League's website here.
