Here are the top four stories today in Woodstock-Towne Lake:
- Cherokee County Fire & Emergency Services (CCFES) and Woodstock Fire and Rescue were called out to a residential fire Saturday night at Knotts Circle. The home's residents were sleeping when the fire broke out, and woke up to smoke and alarms. They escaped through a bedroom window when the hallway proved too dangerous. Meanwhile, their amazing neighbors heard the alarms, saw the residents calling for help from the roof, grabbed a ladder and helped them down to solid ground. There were no injuries reported, though the home was heavily damaged by fire and smoke throughout. The cause of the fire is under investigation. - The Board of Commissioners Regular Meeting is taking place this evening, and the packed agenda shows time for a public hearing on the allowance of motorized carts in the Bradshaw Estates neighborhood. If you'd like to attend, visitors are welcome to board meetings, and you can find the official Rules of Procedure here clarifying how and when the public can address the board. There are also going to be quarterly awards handed out by the Sheriff's Office. The Board is going to be considering the purchase of vehicles for Cherokee Recreation & Parks and the Sheriff's Office, an agreement on renovations and additions to Fire Station 18 and the purchase of acreage on East Cherokee Drive to use in the future for a park, among many other items. The meeting will be held at the Cherokee County Admin Complex at 1130 Bluffs Parkway in Canton. (Cherokee County)
- Boston Elementary School in Woodstock raised over $16,700 with its "Jump Rope for Heart" event. The fundraising effort started in January and ran for a month, ending with a 100-minute event where fifth-graders competed in time and skill contests and teamed up with others for some dual jumping. This year, 190 of the 600 students participated in the fundraiser, with all proceeds going to the American Heart Association and its Kids Heart Challenge. Great job, kids! - Have you heard of the Cherokee Sheriff's Office "RUOK" program? The program is designed to provide check-ins for the elderly, handicapped and homebound people of the county. On each day, at the time requested by the subscriber, someone from the Sheriff's Office will call to verify that the person is okay. In cases where after repeated attempts, no one answers the phone, a deputy will go in person to the home to check on their wellbeing. If you're interested in this service for yourself or loved one, there's more information and a couple required forms at the link. (Cherokee Sheriff's Office)
