Here are the top four stories today in Woodstock-Towne Lake:
- A local Towne Lake auto repair shop teamed up with an organization that helps provide struggling families with housing, food and transportation to gift a car to a Marietta mother last week, giving her more stability and the chance to expand her cleaning business. The Advocates for Children's "Together with Families" program put a call out to Chris Bundrick, the owner of Christian Brothers Automotive, with the initial proposition and it was the perfect fit. The faith-based auto repair shop often gives back to the community by offering free repairs when possible, and is looking to continue repairing, then gifting donated cars to local people in need. If you have a vehicle with an issue that can be fixed that you'd like to donate to the cause, please reach out to the repair shop's Towne Lake Parkway location by calling 770-926-4500 or their Acworth location at 770-966-1599. - The Cherokee Board of Commissioners is holding its regular meeting today at 6 p.m. Along with time for a public hearing and vote to remove zoning conditions for Boardwalk Storage locations at 1265 and 1550 Univeter Road, the meeting agenda has many items listed, including the disbursement of funds received via the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). It is proposed that $2.8 million of ARPA funds be awarded to local nonprofit agencies, an earlier request from the county sent out asking for project proposals from nonprofits brought in 29 project requests from 13 organizations. The projects submitted include one from the Canton Housing Authority for the demolition and abatement of old buildings, one from the Goshen Valley Foundation for the purchase of a medical building and one from the Boys and Girls Club for the installation of controlled door access, smoke detectors and occupancy sensors. - Last week, the county unveiled improvements to Kenney Askew Memorial Park that were made in part with a grant received from the food company, Pilgrim's. The improvements include a new walking track, picnic pavilion, playground and pickleball courts, as well as upgrades to the existing tennis court and park landscaping. Pilgrim's "Hometown Strong Initiative," a program created to dole out $20 million of Pilgrim's funds to be invested in cities nationwide, awarded Cherokee County with the grant in 2020. Those funds were combined with funds received through SPLOST, totaling approximately $715,000 that was put into the improvement project at the park. (Cherokee County)
- The Cherokee County School Board approved the school district's student achievement improvement plans for the upcoming school year. The plans for improvement are required by all district schools each year, and must include research-based strategies with regard to student learning at every level, teacher professional development plans, timelines for student learning intervention strategies and an explanation of how student learning progression will be monitored and measured. You can view each school's Improvement Plan Executive Summary online. Other agenda items from the school board meeting include recognition for achievements and the approval of August's financial reports and an annual contract to operate the Head Start preschool program. She just slipped out of a chair and fell to the carpeted floor. She's fine, but after about 20 minutes of trying to get her up, I knew that we needed help. I called Cherokee 911 at 11:51 p.m. and they showed up at 11:56 p.m. The guys got her up quickly and were on their way. Kudos and many thanks to Cherokee 911." (Nextdoor)
