Here are the top five stories in Woodstock-Towne Lake today:
- An officer involved shooting in Canton is being investigated by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. The shooting occurred Saturday and was the result of an earlier domestic incident in Woodstock. Around 11 a.m., Woodstock resident Mark Allen, 67, attempted to enter a home occupied by an individual with a Temporary Protective Order in place against him. After his attempt to gain entry by shooting the front door was unsuccessful, he left the premises and was later found in the parking lot of the Canton Red Lobster on Riverstone Parkway. Mark Allen was armed with a gun when found in the parking lot and was shot by the responding officer. The suspect was transported to the hospital in critical condition. (Georgia Bureau of Investigation Press Release)
- With school starting up today, the Woodstock Police Department would like to remind us to brush up on the School Bus Laws here in Georgia. Did you know that "drivers traveling in the opposite direction of the bus on a multi-lane road that has a permanent barrier or grass/concrete median do not have to stop, but should still slow down and drive with caution"? (Woodstock Police Department via Facebook)
- Leighton Graham, a firefighter out of Station 9 in Cherokee County, has been recognized as July's "Hero of the Month" by the Marietta-based real estate company, Local Realty. The monthly honor recognizes veterans, police officers, firefighters, EMT's, doctors, nurses, teachers and other citizens that serve or have served our community or country as a whole. Leighton has been a firefighter since 2021 and is currently enrolled in a paramedic program as well. (Marietta Daily Journal Online)
- Woodstock senior Adonis Garcia has committed to the Appalachian State Mountaineers. Adonis transferred to Woodstock High School last year, where he ranked second on the team. During the 2021 season, he recorded 28 tackles and 5 pass break ups and averaged20.2 yards per kickoff return. Adonis is the fourth pledge out of Georgia for App State. (247Sports)
- An upcoming episode of "Evil Lives Here" will tell the story of a terrifying attack on a local Canton woman that took place on New Year's Day, 2021. Her attacker bound and assaulted her, his identity hidden. Through the investigation, the true horror of the assault came to light.
