Here are the top three stories in Woodstock-Towne Lake today:

  1. The Cherokee Sheriff's Office has joined the rest of the county in outfitting officers with body cameras. Unable to justify the cost prior to now, as of Tuesday, the agency has 174 body cameras designated for field operations and another 150 for jail operations. The full Axon camera system will be adopted throughout the vehicle fleet, replacing 13 of the current on-dash camera systems this month and the remainder by April. Aside from manually turning the cameras on, the in-car camera system will engage automatically when the lights come on and the vehicle is on, and all body cameras within range will engage automatically when a nearby officer's gun is removed from the holster. The purchase of the Axon system was approved in a June Board of Commissioners meeting, where the vote was unanimous. The contract with Axon runs through September 2027, and the system was purchased with a mix of funds, including $930,000 via the federal American Rescue Plan Act. Footage from the cameras will be available to the public upon submitting an open records request. (Subscription: Cherokee Tribune & Ledger-News)
  2. The winners of the 2022 WDSTK Scarecrow Invasion have been announced! The Public Vote, first place winner is Primrose School of Sixes & Bells Ferry, second place goes to Primrose School of Woodstock East and the third place spot is held by Lights Up! Entertainment. The winner of the judged category, Most Creative, is Crabapple Landscaping Experts. To see pictures of the scarecrows and the listing of the Top 30 scarecrows as voted by you, the citizens of Woodstock, click the link to go to Downtown Woodstock's Facebook page here. Way to go, Primrose, and congratulations to all! (Downtown Woodstock via Facebook)
  3. If you and your family loves having fun, there's a great event coming up on Saturday for you to check out. And, bonus - it's an opportunity to help two local firefighters. The Cherokee County Fire Training Complex at 3985 Holly Springs Parkway will be the place to go this weekend for live firefighting demonstrations, photo opportunities, BBQ plates for purchase and activities for the kids, including the chance to climb up into the trucks. The event will be held from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. and will help raise money for The Cherokee County Firefighters Relief Fund to help local firefighters David Burnaugh and David Gray in their fight against cancer. You can also make monetary donations by scanning the QR codes pictured on the event flyer, which is posted online here. (Cherokee Sheriff's Office via Facebook)

  • Our county really came through for the Cherokee County Animal Shelter! After a Facebook post on Sunday requesting donations of dry cat food, the shelter almost immediately received said donations by the armload. The shelter posted a picture online of the wall of packages, it really warms the heart. This county is the best - way to go! (Cherokee County Animal Shelter via Facebook)
  • Reformation Brewery is holding a Breakfast & Black Friday Taproom Party on November 25, from 6 - 11 a.m. Beer for breakfast? Why not! Previous winners are not eligible, but for everyone else, the prize is a free annual pass to the Aquatic Center. (Cherokee Recreation & Parks)
  • For those that could use a refresher on how to use a traffic roundabout, the Woodstock PD posted a nice little visual aid on their Facebook page. As roundabouts become more common in the area, the agency's post lists some timely reminders about the use and reason behind the ever-spreading road circles. The takeaway? Roundabouts help keep us safe. They keep traffic moving by way of reducing the speed of traffic, instead of the stop/start a light or stop sign may cause. Traffic circles also reduce the number of fatal and serious injuries at intersection points. (Woodstock Police Department via Facebook)

  • Downtown Woodstock: "Make plans to be at the Holiday Sip + Shop in Downtown Woodstock on November 17th. Tickets are $10 per person and can be purchased at https://wdstkbrandstore.square... Your favorite shops will have special deals! Find the perfect gift." (Downtown Woodstock via Instagram)
