- Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services (CCFES) responded to a house fire on Wednesday near the Lake Arrowhead community in Waleska. The fire broke out around 5 a.m. in a home located on Indian Oak Drive, there were two residents present at the time, but they were able to escape without assistance. Units from seven area stations responded, and they were able to extinguish the fire. The cause is still under investigation. (Woodstock-Towne Lake Patch and CCFES via Facebook)
- For those on the Macedonia and Ball Ground side, there is a very large motorcycle event taking place on Sunday that will impact area traffic. As many as 1,000 motorcycles will be leaving from the Kroger in Macedonia at 1 p.m., marking the beginning of The North Georgia Toy Run. The pack will travel north on East Cherokee Drive, south on Highway 5, and then south on I-575. They will leave I-575 South at exit 16, turn left onto Highway 5, and head to the Moose Lodge in Canton from there. The ride will resume around 2:15 p.m. when the riders leave the Moose Lodge to travel south on Highway 5. They will catch I-575 and head north to Pickens County. - Georgia Youth Science & Technology Centers (GYSTC) has recognized two district educators out of Clark Creek Elementary School STEM Academy as 2023 Don Cargill STEM Scholar Award winners. According to the executive director of the GYSTC, there are two key factors in teachers Teresa Bailey and Kimberly Harrison winning the award - they both have "an aptitude for identifying unique strengths and potential in their students and demonstrate a record of creating and presenting engaging classroom lessons" and they "have led student-based projects with impact that reached beyond their classroom, involving their entire school and community." Each teacher received $500 to use for classroom STEM supplies, Ms. Bailey for her STEM Odyssey lab classes and Ms. Harrison for her AIM Gifted classes. (CCSD Press Release)
- Start gathering your old and broken electronics, The Cherokee County Recycling Center is holding an electronics recycling event on Saturday! Items that can be accepted free of charge include personal computers, laptops, modems, printers, batteries and more. Items that can be accepted for a fee include televisions for $25, CRT monitors for $10, large projection televisions for $40 and LCD monitors for $5. You can see the full list of recyclable items here. The event will be held at the Cherokee County Administration Building, located at 1130 Bluffs Parkway in Canton, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. This is a cash-only, drive-through event, the team will unload your items for you. - Local country singer Bryce Leatherwood has advanced through to the semifinals on the hit NBC show, The Voice. Leatherwood, along with the rest of the top-eight singers, will be performing on Monday, make sure to tune into NBC at 8 p.m. The two-part finale will air the week after, on December 12 and 13. - Don't forget that Tuesday, December 6, is a Digital Learning Day for Cherokee County students. Your children can log into Canvas for their assignments, and teachers will be sending out further information, including times they will be available for questions or help. (CCSD Press Release)
- The Cherokee County Animal Shelter is holding a special holiday adoption event on Saturday. This week, the shelter will also be offering free adoptions and the opportunity to get a picture with Santa. The hours on Saturday are 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., but I'll have more information for you later this week, once the shelter releases the details. (Cherokee County Animal Shelter via Facebook)

Holiday happenings closing out this week:
- Until December 2: Kits 4 Kids - you can help local students in need by donating hygiene items like tooth paste, feminine products, bar soap and more. You can see the entire list of items and the drop-off locations on the Service League Facebook page.
- Until December 3: Adopt-A-Senior - presented by Cherokee County Senior Services. Requested items include sheets, gift cards to grocery stores, toiletries, chap stick and tissues. Gifts can be dropped off at the Senior Center located at 1001 Univeter Road in Canton Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. On Saturdays, the donation window is 10 a.m. - noon.
- Until December 5: Santa's Letters - presented by Cherokee Recreation & Parks. Bring your child's letter to the special mailbox in the lobby of The WREC, located at 7545 Main Street, Building 200, during regular business hours. Santa will be sending out his responses on December 12.
