  • Sunday: An afternoon thunderstorm. High: 87 Low: 73.

Here are the top four stories today in Woodstock-Towne Lake:

  1. Thursday, September 1, registration opens for the Woodstock Scarecrow Invasion. As in past years, there will likely be a line formed down Main Street by the time the Visitors Center opens at 10 a.m. Plan to head over there early to make sure you get a spot for your scarecrow. You are required to register in person for one of the 220 spots available this year. Check out Woodstock's Facebook page for more information. (City of Woodstock via Facebook)
  2. The deadline to apply for the Citizens' Public Safety Academy is September 6. Applications must be delivered to the Woodstock Police Department in person, so this week is a good time to get those applications ready to go. There are a few qualifications. You must be 19 years or older. Live, work or have an expressed interest in Woodstock. Have no felonies on your record and have no criminal misdemeanor convictions within one year of the application. The application and class schedule can be found online, and classes start on September 8. (Woodstock GA Website)
  3. "Trail Story: The Hike," the project created by the Sequoyah Regional Library System and Woodstock Parks and Recreation, is ending on August 31. As you take a walk down Rubes Creek Trail, you can find signs along the way with QR codes. When you scan those codes with your phone, it will bring up book review questions about the book "The Hike," by Alison Farrell. This weekend will be the last weekend to enjoy this project. (Sequoyah Regional Library System)
  4. A picture taken at a Cherokee County school board meeting was used without permission in a television ad for the New Jersey Education Association, admonishing "extremist" parents in New Jersey. The picture had been changed from color to grey tones and was shown with captions over the picture, including one that read "Some NJ schools under siege." The picture is actually from a discussion about critical race theory in which the man pictured was speaking in support of county parents. (Yahoo!)
