Here are the top five stories today in Woodstock-Towne Lake:

  1. The Cherokee Sheriff's Office is asking for help in identifying a person captured on camera during a incident involving a possible theft of services. The picture can be seen on the Sheriff's Office Facebook page here. The incident in question took place around 9:30 a.m. on October 8 at the Nail Queen Salon at 3502 Sixes Road in Canton. If you have any information on the woman in the picture or the incident itself, please contact the Criminal Investigations Division at 770-928-0235 or via 9-1-1. You can reference the case #SO22-014078. (Cherokee Sheriff's Office via Facebook)
  2. Cherokee Recreation and Parks is hosting two hiking excursions later this month that require registration in advance, please reserve your spot early if you'd like to attend either of them. First up is the Halloween Hiking Scavenger Hunt on October 26 at Lewis Park. Throw on your best costume, lace up your boots and grab your flashlight for the dusk-to-nightfall hike. The Garland Mountain Day Hike is a morning, 4-mile hike for all ages along the Garland Mountain Horse and Hiking Trails. The hike starts at 10 a.m. on October 29 and is labeled as "moderate." Participating children must be accompanied by an adult to both events. (Cherokee Recreation and Parks)
  3. A comprehensive guide to voting in Georgia was published by 11 Alive and there are lots of election-related dates to remember. Let's dive in a bit, as deadlines are fast approaching. Hopefully everyone registered or updated their information, as need be, by the October 11 cut-off date. You can check to make sure you're registered here. If you are voting using an absentee ballot, the deadline to request an application to do so is October 28. All absentee ballots must be received by Election Day, November 8. Those voting early, in person, have from October 17 - November 4 to get their vote in. Finally, everyone voting in person on Election Day will head down to the polls on November 8. You can find our county voting locations here on the official Secretary Of State website and there's a compiled list here, created by 11 Alive. This evening's debate between candidates Sen. Rev. Raphael Warnock and Herschel Walker for the U.S. Senate seat will begin at 7 p.m., airing out of Savannah. Make sure to tune in! (11 Alive)
  4. The North Georgia Health District has planned several initiatives to bring awareness to Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the importance of women getting their exams and screenings done. Routine screening can help catch cancer at an early stage, when it can be cured most easily, but according to the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, almost 10 million screenings were missed in the country due to the pandemic. Cherokee County is included in the group of health departments campaigning for breast health, and for their parts of the initiative, the Health Department in Canton will hold an event on Wednesday, October 19 offering free exams for women ages 40 - 64 that have detected a change in tissue or a listed symptom. The Woodstock Health Center will hold a three-day event offering the same service from October 25 - 27. Please see the post for more information, you can make an appointment by calling Canton at 770-345-7371 or Woodstock at 770-928-0133. (Daily Citizen)
  5. A fire broke out Wednesday morning on Sky Lane Drive, near Kellogg Creek Road. Cherokee County Fire & Emergency Services responded from six different stations to work on the structure fire. On firefighters' arrival, the detached garage was already engulfed in flames and found collapsed from the damage. Two vehicles were also damaged by fire, but the fire was extinguished before damage could spread to neighboring homes. No injuries were reported. (Cherokee County Fire & Emergency Services)
