Here are the top four stories today in Woodstock-Towne Lake:

  1. The Holly Springs Police Department is searching for the person or persons that shot water pellets at two children on August 21 in the Harmony on the Lakes subdivision. A red truck was captured on video, and the police are asking anyone with information on the vehicle or occupants please reach out to the department. (WSB-TV Atlanta)
  2. A Cherokee County resident has been arrested and charged with two counts of public indecency. Donald Harris is accused of exposing himself to a child at Kohl's on Cumming Highway on July 28, and on August 23, Harris allegedly exposed himself to an adult shopper at Hobby Lobby on the same road in Canton.   3. Funded by the Little River Elementary School PTA, upgrades have been made to the school's technology lab. The CCSD superintendent attended the unveiling for the lab improvements on Tuesday along with PTA officers and a few students. Upgrades were made to allow children several options for work spaces, including couches or raised/lowered tables. There were also some fun upgrades made to the furniture and lighting and new gaming-themed areas were added to further engage students. (CCSD Press Release)
  4. As part of their Pathway Profiles series, the CCSD will highlight different programs throughout the year. This week, the focus was on the Construction and Carpentry Pathway program, one of 38 pathways offered in the district. The Construction and Carpentry Pathway is offered at Etowah and Cherokee High Schools and includes industry fundamentals, occupational safety and introduction to construction and carpentry, and the pathway also offers the ability to earn Carpentry Skills Connect industry certification.   • "Morning INfluence with Woodstock Arts," meet with the Woodstock Arts executive director and his team. The networking event includes breakfast. Registration is required. Chambers at City Center, 8534 Main Street (8 a.m.)
  • "Stuffed Animal Sleepover" at Chick-fil-A, 951 Ridgewalk Parkway, Woodstock. Drop off your child's favorite stuffed animal for a sleepover just for the stuffy. Dinner and pictures with the Chick-fil-A cow at 5 p.m., put your stuffy to bed and come back from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. to pick them up. Free event, please register. (5 p.m.)
  • "Jazz Night," on the back porch of the Reeves House. Beverages and snacks will be available for purchase. (6 p.m.)
  • "Wine Tasting BINGO," all supplies are provided, registration is required. The Gifted Ferret, 1910 Eagle Drive (7 p.m.)
  • "Magic The Gathering Draft Tournament," paid admission includes your entry into the tournament, new players are welcome. (7 p.m.)
  • "Cry It Out" - Woodstock Arts Theatre (7:30 p.m.)
  • "From NY, Patrick Sampson In The Listening Room" - Rootstock (8 p.m.)

From my notebook:

  • The Cherokee County School District (CCSD) highlighted Officer Chip Dobbs in a Q&A session this week. In the session, Officer Dobbs was asked for a good piece of advice for parents, he replied that it's very important to monitor children's online communication. Officer Dobbs serves Etowah High School currently, but was with the Cherokee Sheriff's Office (CSO) for 18 years prior. During his time with the sheriff's office, he also served as the detective for the CSO's Internet Crimes Against Children department and was on the GBI Internet Crimes Against Children task force.   • Nikki Quinn of Tippens Education Center has been named a 2022 Support Staff Employee of the Year. She has been with the CCSD for six years, four of which have been spent at Tippens. Her principal was quoted as saying "Nikki invests a little bit of her heart in each person she works with, and we are all better because of knowing her." (CCSD Press Release)
  • "Essential Gardening - Canning & Preserving," presented by the Cherokee County Master Gardeners and the Cherokee County UGA Extension, is coming up on Saturday at 10 a.m. Registration is required for this event, and it is for ages 8 and up. The class will be held at the WGOLSC Activity Center Expansion at 223 Arnold Mill Road. (Woodstock Parks & Recreation)
