Here are the top four stories today in Woodstock-Towne Lake:
- The Woodstock City Council unanimously approved a 30-day moratorium on accepting new zoning, development or construction applications regarding the 100-acre piece of land that sits at the I-575 and Sixes Road interchange. The joint venture of Woodstock, Cherokee County and Holly Springs is aimed at developing the land in a way that creates income and employment for the county and both cities. Each entity has moratoriums in place to allow time for a plan to be assembled between the three, taking into account each one's comprehensive plans, land use and zoning districts of the area. In addition, Woodstock has already held the first of two required readings of a six-month moratorium, the second will take place on February 27. The county is currently in a 45-day moratorium initiated last week, and Holly Springs approved their 40-day moratorium last week as well. (Subscription: Cherokee Tribune & Ledger-News)
- There's some good news and some bad news in the most recent restaurant health inspections around the county. Cactus Cantina, at 402 Argonne Terrace in Canton, received a failing score on its February 12 inspection. The recent score of 46-U (unsatisfactory) was preceded by a 75-C in December and a 70-C in October, with proper holding temperatures one of the repeat offenses in all three inspections. The latest inspection notes several violations that are risk factors for foodborne illness, including hands being unclean and improperly washed and the lack of adequate, supplied and accessible handwashing facilities. And now for the good news - Freight Kitchen & Tap had another inspection after their low score in January and redeemed themselves nicely. Their recent February 8 inspection shows that all previously noted concerns have been corrected and they now hold a 94-A. Just in time for the pub crawl this weekend! (Atlanta News First and North Georgia Health District)
- A five-car accident sent a vehicle over the guardrail in Cherokee County yesterday. The accident on I-75 at Woodstock Road caused delays into the afternoon and drivers were cautioned to avoid the area while clean-up efforts were underway. Thankfully, there were no serious injuries and the highway never had to shut down completely. The cause is still under investigation. (11-Alive)
- Coming up on February 23, Woodstock Parks and Recreation is hosting a discussion on desegregation and integration in Cherokee County during the 1960s. Harvee White, education manager at History Cherokee and committee chair of History Cherokee's Black History Committee, will be leading the discussion at the William G. Long Senior Center Activity Center Expansion, located at 223 Arnold Mill Road. The event is limited to 35 people, so if you'd like to attend, be sure to register soon! Attendees must be at least 10 years old, and there will be coffee and dessert served. (Subscription: Cherokee Tribune & Ledger-News and Free: Woodstock Parks and Recreation)
