Here are the top four stories in Woodstock-Towne Lake today:
- A new officer was sworn in at the Woodstock Police Department and he's the most adorable officer there, bar none (sorry, K-9's). Junior Officer Ezra King, 6, took his oath in a swearing in ceremony like every officer does, complete with uniform, cupcakes and all. This young officer, though, has fiercely battled cancer since he was a baby. His family recently found out that chemotherapy has stopped working, and he is heading now towards a September 7 surgery to remove as much tumor as possible. Junior Officer King can certainly find the whole of the Woodstock PD and the citizens of Woodstock standing right behind him. (Fox 5 Atlanta)
- Cherokee County Fire & Emergency Services responded to a structure fire on Putnam Ford Drive on Thursday afternoon. A barn housing farm equipment and 28 horses were found with heavy smoke and nearby sawdust close to catching fire. All horses were safely removed and the fire was extinguished. No people or animals were injured. (Cherokee County Fire & Emergency Services Press Release)
- On the First Wednesday of each month, April through October, head on over to Cherokee Veterans Park in Canton for "Unwind Wednesday." The next event is on September 7, from 5:30 - 8 p.m. and will feature three food trucks, Joes Lonestar Tacos, Cheez'd and Confused Grilled Cheese Truck and Crazy Hawg BBQ. There is also a Facebook event page if you'd like to see more information and track updates on that platform instead. (Cherokee Recreation and Parks)
- The Cherokee County School District announced its latest class of AP Capstone program graduates. The selective program is project based and helps students develop crucial skills for academic success. Designed by The College Board, the program is offered in select U.S. high schools. Locally, Etowah graduated its first program class in 2019, Sequoyah High School graduated its first class this year, and River Ridge High School is set to graduate its first class in 2023. 14,100 students nationwide have earned the AP Capstone Diploma and 9,200 students have earned the AP Seminar and Research Certificate. The local AP Capstone Diploma recipients for 2022 include 13 students from Sequoyah HS, where three received the AP Seminar and Research Certificate. Etowah HS also had 13 diploma recipients with four earning the AP Seminar and Research Certificate. (CCSD Press Release)
