Obituary: Robert Duane Flaherty

Longtime Employee at Wailea Beach Resort - Marriott Hotel in Maui

Robert Duane Flaherty, 75, of Beacon Falls, passed away peacefully at home on July 24, 2021, after a brief battle with cancer. Born an April Fool on April 1, 1946 in Stamford, CT, Rob was raised in Shelton, CT and moved to Maui, Hawaii in the 1980’s, where he lived most of his adult life, before returning to Connecticut to live out his final years.

Rob is predeceased by his parents, Winifred and Frederick L. Flaherty, as well as his brother, Frederick L. Flaherty, Jr. He is survived by his family, including siblings Ruth Morelli (Dom Morelli), Donna Capossela, Stanlyetta Budetti, and David Flaherty; and a host of nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. He is also survived by his loving long-time girlfriend, Janet Merenda, and her family, including her children and grandchildren.

Rob was known to be a gifted writer, and retired from the Wailea Beach Resort - Marriott Hotel in Maui after decades of service. In his younger years, he was known to football teammates as “Flash Flaherty”, and went on to coach the Shelton High School football team. He especially loved to spend time with the children in his family, creating a special bond with each of them. Always the jokester, he never took life too seriously and brought his kind and lighthearted manner to every occasion. His quick laugh and bright smile will be missed by all who knew him.
