Forbes identified the wealthiest person in each state. Here's Illinois' richest:

ILLINOIS — Illinois' richest resident is Ken Griffin, the founder and CEO of the hedge fund Citadel, who is worth $11.7 billion, according to Forbes.

Griffin, 50, a Florida native, founded Citadel in 1990 and first appeared on the Forbes 400 in 2003, when he had an estimated worth of $650 million. According to his bio on the Citadel website, he started trading from his Harvard dorm room at age 19.

Griffin has been the state's richest person since 2013. His wealth has increased since 2017, when he was worth an estimated $8 billion.

The net worth of the individuals on the list varies. For example, Washington is home to the world’s two richest and most recognizable billionaires; Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates, but in certain states, the richest people only had a nine-figure net worth, Forbes writes.

Collectively, the wealthy on the Forbes list had a net worth of $875 billion, which the magazine says set a new record.

  • Jacqueline Mars: $28.1 billion (Virginia)
  • John Mars: $28.1 billion (Wyoming)
