Eat Local: Illinois Farmers Market Guide 2022

Farmers markets across the state are starting to open for the season. Check out our annual guide to some of the best Illinois has to offer.

ILLINOIS — Farmers markets are annually a rite of spring throughout the state, bringing members of communities together. With summer officially starting next month, the weekly markets are beginning to open, and will be busy spots through the fall.

The Illinois Department of Agriculture said the COVID-19 outbreak has highlighted how vital farmers markets are to communities and the agricultural industry. Farmers markets provide consumer access to local produce and fresh food, as well as providing a marketplace for Illinois farmers and specialty crop growers, according to the IDOA.

While COVID-19 restrictions have eased compared to the last few years, most markets have specific pandemic rules in place and are taking precautions to ensure the safety of market-goers. The Centers for Disease Control states that outdoor farmers markets are a "lower risk shopping option" that benefits both shoppers and the community.
