1 Dead, 1 Critically Injured After 2 Semis Collide In Kane County

The collision happened at Miller Road and Route 31 in Dundee Township Tuesday morning.

KANE COUNTY, IL — One driver was killed and another driver was critically injured after two semis collided on Route 31 at Miller Road in Dundee Township Tuesday morning.

The collision happened at about 7:40 a.m. when a Freightliner semi, which was headed east on Miller Road and approaching Route 31, did not stop for a stop sign and collided with a Mack semi, which was headed south on Route 31 at the time, according to a news release from the Kane County Sheriff's Office.

The driver of the Freightliner semi was ejected from the cab of his vehicle. The semi, which was hauling sand, rolled and ended up on the north shoulder of the roadway on Route 31, according to a news release.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. His identity has not yet been released.

The Mack semi left the road and was found in a field on the east side of Route 31. The driver, who has been identified as David Ortiz, 60, of the 300 block of Chase Terrance in Streamwood, was taken by ambulance to Advocate Sherman Hospital with critical injuries.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation.
