Algonquin Police Squad Car Hits Bicyclist: Authorities

No citations were issued after an Algonquin police officer struck and injured a bicyclist that was crossing the street in Algonquin Thursday afternoon, officials said.

The incident happened around 12:15 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of South Main Street and Division Street in Algonquin, according to the Algonquin Police Department.

Algonquin Deputy Police Chief Dennis Walker said an Algonquin police car was turning right onto northbound South Main Street from Division Street.

The bicyclist had been traveling southbound on the east sidewalk that parallels South Main Street, Walker said. The bicyclist was attempting to cross Division Street when he was hit by the police car.

The bicyclist, a 71-year-old man, was transported to Northwestern Medicine Hospital in Huntley with non-life-threatening injuries, Walker said.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office was called to the scene to handle the investigation.

McHenry County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Emily Matusek said the bicyclist “proceeded onto the roadway without stopping” when the collision happened.

Officials did not say whether the officer had a red or green light when turning onto Main Street.

The squad car struck the bicyclist’s left leg and the man fell off the bike onto his shoulder.

Matusek said that the sheriff’s office did not issue any citations to the officer or the victim.
