Jacobs High School In Algonquin On ‘Shelter In Place' After SWAT Incident At Nearby Hotel

Harry D. Jacobs High School in Algonquin is on a shelter in place as a SWAT team and police respond to an ongoing standoff with a wanted man at a hotel across from the school.

The Algonquin Police Department responded around 10:53 a.m. Wednesday to the Holiday Inn Express, 2595 Bunker Hill Drive in Algonquin, for a report of suspicious activity.

Algonquin Deputy Police Chief Ryan Markham said officers learned that a guest of the hotel was wanted on a felony arrest warrant.

Officers attempted to contact the subject but he refused to answer the door of his hotel room and indicated that he would resist officers’ attempts to take him into custody, Markham said.

Police do not know whether or not the man is armed.

Members of the Algonquin Police Department have secured the scene and the subject is contained, Markham said.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team is responding and will assist with negotiations with the man.

“There does not appear to be an immediate threat to the public at this time,” Markham said.

Due to the proximity of the incident to Harry D. Jacobs High School, District 300 administration was notified by police.

An email sent to parents from the school district said that the school was entering a shelter in place as a precautionary measure. “There is no threat or incident inside Jacobs High School.”

Students and staff are not allowed to exit the building and no one is allowed to enter the building.

The Algonquin Police Department said they are urging the public to avoid the area of the Holiday Inn Express.
