When temperatures drop below freezing, water pipes in your home can freeze and sustain damage that can potentially lead to water leaks. Use these tips to help protect against frozen water lines:

  • Eliminate drafts and other sources of cold air near water piping.
  • Repair or close up any openings, particularly in garages and attic spaces.
  • Install pipe insulation or a UL-listed heat tape that will help protect vulnerable pipes from freezing. These products can be purchased at a local hardware store.
  • Install a Styrofoam cover or pipe insulation over the water meter to provide protection. These products can be purchased at a local hardware store.
  • Maintain the temperature of your home at 55 degrees or higher.
  • Drain water lines to outside faucets, which includes disconnecting any garden hoses. If possible, drain the water lines supplying the outside faucets from inside the home.
