Accused Schaumburg Shooter Acted In Self-Defense: Lawyer
A Glendale Heights man faces murder charges in the death of Quentin D. Tillison, who was the victim of a daylight shooting Monday.

SCHAUMBURG, IL — The Glendale Heights man who surrendered to police in connection with a fatal daylight shooting in Schaumburg earlier this week has been charged, according to police. Oliver L. Rhone, 37, of the 2200 block of Century Point Lane, was charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of Quentin D. Tillison, 38, who died from his injuries after he was shot in the stomach Monday in a Walgreens parking lot, Schaumburg police said in a statement. Rhone was ordered held without bail Friday after his lawyer told a judge that his client was acting in self-defense and that Tillison had threatened Rhone for years.
Rhone, accompanied by his lawyer, turned himself in Wednesday following attempts to arrest him earlier in the day, according to police. Investigators had executed search warrants Wednesday morning at Rhone's home and a location on Cambridge Lane in Schaumburg but were unable to find him, police said.
The shooting happened around 5:15 p.m. Monday, Aug. 14, in front of Walgreens in the 1100 block of Roselle Road. Tillison was taken to Lutheran General Hospital, where he died from his injuries at around 2:09 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 15, according to police. During Friday's court hearing, prosecutors accused Rhone of waiting for Tillison to leave the drug store before approaching the victim and then opening fire, the Chicago Tribune reports. According to prosecutors, Rhone fled the scene but not before chasing Tillison from the parking lot to Roselle Road, where the victim collapsed, the report stated.

But Ken Merlino, Rhone's lawyer, claimed his client acted in self-defense, alleging that Tillison had been threatning Rhone for years, according to the Tribune. In the past, Merlino said Tillison allegedly pulled a gun on Rhone and tried to rob him, as well as allegedly stabbing Rhone in the throat, an attack that did not result in criminal charges against Tillison, the report added.

According to Merlino, Rhone was a legal gun owner, the report stated. Rhone's lawyer also said that his client was working to obtain a concealed carry license, the report added.
Rhone's next court date is Sept. 13.
