AHeights' Jimmy Garoppolo Signs Record 5-Year NFL Deal With 49ers

The contract is said to be worth $137.5M, the NFL Network reports. Find out what he could buy every village resident with that kind of cash.

To say it's been an impresive past three months for NFL quarterback and Arlington Heights native Jimmy Garoppolo is a bit of an understatement. The Rolling Meadows High School graduate has gone from backing up the ageless Tom Brady under center for New England to going 5-0 as San Francisco's starter after the Patriots dealt him to the 49ers in late October.

Along the way, he was even able to notch a win against the Chicago Bears — the team he rooted for as a kid — and earn a $107,000 playoff share for the half-season he was with the Pats.

But Garoppolo's show-topper came Thursday when he and the 49ers agreed to a five-year deal worth $137.5 million, according to Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network. Based on its average annual salary, the contract is the largest in league history.

  • With his average yearly salary, he could buy every Arlington Heights resident a quality, 55-inch smart HD TV … and still have roughly $1.25 million in his account.
  • With his average weekly salary, he could afford to buy everyone in the village a Big Mac Extra Value Meal from McDonald's (an apropos comparison given Ray Kroc, one of the men behind the fast food chain, lived in Arlington Heights).
  • With his average daily salary, he could just about give a crisp dollar bill to each resident.

Whether Garoppolo's future performance is worth that type of investment from the 49ers remains to be seen. But his past play — as limited a a sample size as it is — certainly bodes well for San Francisco.

Garoppolo, who was drafted by New England in the second round of the 2014 playoffs, is undefeated (7-0) as a starter for both the Pats and the 49ers. He has a 99.7 career passer rating during his time as a pro, completing 67.3 percent of his passes and throwing 12 touchdowns and only five interceptions.

As an NFL starter, Garoppolo also has led his team to more points per game — 28.3 — than any other quarterback who has started at least seven games in the past 25 seasons, according to NFL Research. The player who previously held that distinction? Tom Brady, of course.
