According to a proffer shared with Patch by prosecutors, the two had been dating since April, but Rodriguez had told multiple friends she had ended the relationship Monday night after Briseno reportedly appeared uninvited at a club, recorded her without consent, and left a voicemail pleading for reconciliation.

On Tuesday morning, Rodriguez had driven to the fitness gym alone for a 5:15 a.m. class. F45 Training Schaumburg is located immediately west of Bonefish Grill in the strip mall, and several surveillance cameras captured the incident. Rodriguez had arrived five minutes early for the class in a Land Rover Discovery and parked in the south parking lot. No other businesses in the strip mall were open at the time.

Briseno arrived a few minutes later in a blue Mazda registered to him and parked near Rodriguez's vehicle, according to the proffer. He then approached Rodriguez, who was still in her car, and got into the front passenger seat.

Soon thereafter, Rodriguez's car is seen on surveillance reversing from the parking space and driving toward the exit of the strip mall at a slow pace. The car ultimately stopped at the stop sign, where it remained throughout the incident.

Rodriguez exited her car, and stumbled before falling to the ground. Prosecutors said she then tried to run through the parking lot, screaming for help, while Briseno chased her. He eventually caught up to her and pushed her to the ground, which also caused him to fall.

According to the proffer, Briseno then stood over Rodriguez, who was facing down, and tried to turn her over while the two struggled. Briseno reportedly knelt over Rodriguez, and repeatedly swung his arms toward her while she kicked and attempted to get up. The assault continued for another few minutes.

A witness parked nearby heard Rodriguez screaming for help, exited their car, and saw Briseno on top of the victim in a physical struggle. The witness returned to their car and called 911, remaining on scene until police arrived.

Briseno then reportedly dragged Rodriguez toward the rear driver side of her vehicle and appeared to open the rear passenger side door as the victim attempted to stand. He pushed Rodriguez back to the ground before lifting and dragging her.

Police arrived at around 5:26 a.m., found Rodriguez's car still running and both the driver's side and rear-driver side doors open. No occupants were inside the vehicle. Police discovered Rodriguez lying on her back with torn clothing and heavy bleeding from her face and chest. Briseno, who was standing directly behind the victim, was covered in blood on his hands and clothes. Police said he was wearing only socks, no shoes.

Briseno was placed in custody, and police found a knife on the rear passenger seat next to a child safety seat. Rodriguez told police she could not breathe and appeared to be choking on blood. She was taken to St. Alexius Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 5:52 a.m.

Police said Briseno, who had open cuts on his hands, complained of pain to his temple and was taken to the hospital. In the course of seeking treatment, he reportedly advised medical personnel that he fell on his head.

An autopsy conducted by the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office determined Rodriguez died from multiple injuries due to the assault, with the manner of death being homicide. Prosecutors said Rodriguez had sustained over a dozen stab wounds, including fatal stab wounds to the neck that lacerated blood vessels. Additional injuries included a punctured stomach, fractured right ribs, and multiple defensive wounds to the hands.

According to an obituary for Rodriguez, she leaves behind a daughter, as well as other family members and friends. Visitation is scheduled for noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, at Kolssak Funeral Home, 189 S. Milwaukee Ave. in Wheeling. Visitation will resume at 8 a.m. Monday, at the funeral home until 9:15 a.m., followed by a procession to The Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe for a 10 a.m. Mass. Entombment to follow at All Saints Catholic Cemetery, Des Plaines, IL.
