District 214 Superintendent Wins National Honor For 2018
David Schuler was named National Superintendent of the Year on Thursday, becoming the 1st district head from Illinois to earn the award.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL — David Schuler, superintendent for Township High School District 214, received the 2018 National Superintendent of the Year award Thursday, according to the Daily Herald. The head of the second-largest school district in the state became the first Illinois superintendent to receive the national honor from the American Association of School Administrators.
In its 31st year, the award is open to all U.S. superintendents with plans to continue that career path. A $10,000 college scholarship will be given in Schuler's name to a District 214 student or one from the high school Schuler graduated. He also received a ribbon, a medal and the traditional blue blazer given to winners to wear, the Herald reports.
Schuler beat out three other finalists who were chosen because of their achievements in the following areas: leadership for learning, professionalism and community involvement. He was announced as the winner at a ceremony honoring the finalists as part of the AASA's National Conference on Education in Nashville, Tennessee.

"The superintendents we are honoring represent the face of public education," said Daniel A. Domenech, AASA's executive director, following December's announcement of the finalists. "This program celebrates the accomplishments by the education thought leaders we're honoring. We also celebrate the tremendous strides public education is making in our communities."

"[Schuler] has a wonderful way of challenging you and asking you to rethink things that really has no boundaries or limits," said Lazaro Lopez, the district's associate superintendent for teaching and learning, after Schueler was awarded the 2018 Illinois Superintendent of the Year by the Illinois Association of School Administrators in November.
