Elk Grove Man Dies After Being Hit In Head By SUV Mirror: Police

According to a report, police said the victim was standing along a curb in Elk Grove Village when an SUV's side mirror hit his head.

ELK GROVE VILLAGE, IL — Elk Grove Village Police Department said they're continuing to investigate a Thursday crash near Walnut and Maple lanes, during which an SUV's side mirror hit a pedestrian standing along the curb, causing a fatal head injury, according to the Daily Herald. Police said the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office identified the victim as 75-year-old Gerald Frens, who was hit by the side mirror around 3:55 p.m. Thursday and died Friday due to a closed head injury, the medical examiner said, according to the news report.

Police said a 63-year-old Elk Grove Village man was driving a 1996 Chevrolet Suburban west on Walnut from Tonne Road and turned left onto Maple when the driver side mirror hit Frens' head. Although police said Frens was alert and talking to first responders before he was taken to Amita Alexian Brothers Hospital in Elk Grove Village, he ended up needing surgery due to his condition worsening, the Daily Herald said. He was pronounced dead at 8:20 p.m. Friday.

According to the Daily Herald, Police said the man driving the SUV was cited for improper turn and no valid proof of insurance.
