Rosemont Minor League Baseball Team Unveils Name: The Chicago Dogs

The Wiener Circle in Chicago will be sponsoring giveaways and other activities Friday as part of the announcement.

ROSEMONT, IL — The Chicago area's newest sports franchise now has a name. The Rosemont-based minor league baseball team will be called the Chicago Dogs when players take the field in May of 2018 at a new $60 million, 6,300-seat stadium, which is currently under construction at Balmoral Avenue and Pearl Street.

As part of team's announcement of its name Friday, July 28, hot dog spot the Wiener Circle, 2622 N. Clark St., will be sponsoring special activities and giveaways throughout the day, including whiffle ball games and selfie photo ops on a hot dog couch. The restaurant will hold a Hot Dog Happy Hour from 4 to 7 p.m., serving $1 hot dog specials. (Get Patch real-time email alerts for the latest Arlington Heights news. Costumed characters, such as Elvis and Santa Claus, also will be riding Chicago Trolley & Double Decker Company buses until 1:30 p.m. Friday, offering free hot dogs and Chicago Dogs merchandise throughout downtown Chicago.

“We wanted a name that captures the spirit and culture of Chicago,” Chicago Dogs co-owner Shawn Hunter said in a team statement announcing the name. “It had to be fun and authentic. Ultimately, our goal is to make every day fan appreciation day at the new ballpark in Rosemont.”

The Dogs will be part of the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball Group, a league of unaffiliated teams based in Durham, North Carolina, that also includes the Gary SouthShore Railcats. Other minor league teams in the Chicago area include the Schaumburg Boomers, the Joliet Slammers and Crestwood's Windy City Thunderbolts in the Frontier League.

The franchise also is giving away an opening weekend package that includes game tickets, a behind-the-scenes, guided ballpark tour, access to one of the VIP areas and a gift bag of Chicago Dogs gear.
