AURORA, IL — A two-time convicted felon, of Aurora, will remain in jail ahead of his trial for possession of a loaded handgun, a DuPage County judge decided on Monday.

Naperville police caught Parion Lane with a loaded firearm and 16 grams of ecstasy during a traffic stop at 1 a.m. Sunday, officials said.

The incident began near Washington Street and Ogden Avenue after Naperville police saw the expired plates on a car at a gas station. Police followed the vehicle and conducted a stop near 14th Avenue and Main Street.

Before stopping, an officer saw the driver, identified as Lane, "make furtive movements towards the driver's side floorboard," according to a news release from the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office. Officials say Lane then exited the car and leaned toward the floorboard again before fleeing on foot.

The man was taken into custody after a brief pursuit. In the car, police found a loaded Springfield 9mm handgun on the driver's side floorboard, while Lane carried the ecstasy.

The 23-year-old Lane, of the 500 block of Superior Street, was charged with one felony count of unlawful possession of a firearm by a repeat felony offender, one felony count of unlawful possession of a controlled substance and multiple misdemeanor offenses including resisting a police officer.

Lane appeared for his first court date on Monday when Judge Joshua Dieden granted the state's motion to deny pre-trial release.

If convicted, Lane will face between six to 20 years in prison, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said. His next court date is set for March 24.

"In DuPage County, we will continue our efforts to remove illegally possessed firearms from our streets before they can be used in the commission of a crime," Berlin said in a statement. "As a convicted felon who is currently on parole, Mr. Lane has forfeited his right to legally possess a firearm."
