AURORA, IL — A man died Wednesday morning after he was shot by two Aurora police officers, according to officials at the Aurora Police Department.

The shooting occurred after midnight near South Broadway and Hazel Avenue in Aurora.

In a news release, an Aurora Police Department spokesperson wrote that officers responded around 1:30 a.m. to a mutual aid request attempting to locate a person wanted in connection with aggravated battery to a Geneva police officer. Officials said Aurora officers found the vehicle traveling south on Lake Street near Galena Boulevard, and the driver refused when police attempted to stop the car.

Police proceeded to pursue the car northbound on Route 25. As the car approached Ashland Avenue, officers deployed stop sticks, and the car stopped a short distance later, according to the release.

"As officers attempted to contact the driver, the driver displayed a weapon, and two Aurora police officers discharged their firearms at the driver," officials wrote in the release. "This resulted in the driver being struck by gunfire."

Officials said the officers rendered aid until Aurora paramedics arrived and brought him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Both officers have been placed on administrative leave, as is standard protocol for officer-involved deaths.

The Kane County Coroner's Office has not yet released the person's identity, pending an autopsy.

The Kane County Major Crimes Task Force is leading the investigation into the shooting — the Aurora Police Department will not be involved, according to a news release from the Kane County State's Attorney's Office.

Investigators will provide a complete report to State's Attorney Jamie Mosser, who will determine if the use of force was justified. The task force comprises law enforcement officers from across Kane County.

"It is a thorough, fair, and just process that will take place over the next few months," officials at the Kane County State's Attorney's Office said.
