Barrington Area Special Voices Hosts Allergen-Free Trick-or-Treating

Trick-or-treating can be a blast for most kids, but for some it can actually be a health risk.

For children with food allergies or other special needs, going door-to-door on Halloween isn’t recommended. Barrington Area Special Voices (BASV) has created a unique trick-or-treating experience for these kids so they can have the same fun as other children this time of year.

“It’s not only for kids who might have allergies, but it is also for those with special needs. They could be kids in a wheelchair, or that have different sensory issues and things like that that maybe trick-or-treating where there’s masses of kids out there may not be the best thing for them,” Doreen Colletti-Muhs, board member of BASV said.

This is the fourth year BASV has held their allergen free trick-or-treating event. This year it will be held on Oct. 30 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Oxbow Lane in the Fox Point neighborhood. Children who participate in the free event are promised a spooktacular time.

“We’re going to have a pumpkin carving demo, a haunted house for the kids...kids are going to decorate mini pumpkins, there will be kettle corn that kids will get as well,” Colletti-Muhs said.

Kids will be able to trick-or-treat at about 10 to 15 homes. Allergen-free candy and trinkets provided by BASV will be passed out at each home, thanks to a generous grant from the Barrington Junior Women's Club.

“It’s great for any kind of special needs child. They might be handicapped in some way, they might just not want to be overloaded and overstimulated with tons of kids running around. It’s really just a small area for them to cover,” Coletti-Muhs said.
