Batavia City Hall To Serve As Cooling Center During Extreme Heat Advisory

A high of 98 degrees is forecast for Wednesday and Thursday, with a possible peak heat index of 115.

BATAVIA, IL — The City of Batavia established a temporary cooling center at City Hall while a National Weather Service-issued extreme heat advisory is in effect Wednesday and Thursday.

The advisory was issued for more than a dozen counties in northern Illinois, including Kane, that will be in effect from 10 a.m. Wednesday through 10 p.m. Thursday.

The high for Wednesday and Thursday is 98 degrees, and the peak heat index value during that extreme heat watch timeframe will be 115 degrees, Patch reported.

The week is forecast to close out with chances of stormy weather as a cold front approaches the region, according to the National Weather Service.

The cooling center, located at 100 N. Island Ave., "will be open for the benefit of the elderly, families with small children, and other vulnerable residents" during the entirety of the extreme heat advisory. The city will be unable to provide sleeping accommodations, dedicated hygiene or washing facilities or refrigerators for food storage, officials said.

Guests should check in with the front desk of the Batavia Police Department upon arrival. Anyone with questions about the cooling center is directed to call the police at 630-454-2500.
