Batavia Tavern Damaged by Fire Started by Cigarette

The fire began when a cigarette butt was thrown into a bed of mulch behind the building.

The crowd at Crosstown Pub, 1890 Mill St. in Batavia was evacuated at around 9 p.m. Wednesday night after a small fire began, the Chicago Tribune reported. The bar is located on the southwest side of Batavia. The building’s automatic fire alarm system had activated.

“Employees had been notified of the fire and were dumping water on it as we arrived and were evacuating patrons from the building,” Batavia Fire Department Battalion Fire Chief Shawn Stephens told the Tribune.“Firemen on the scene doused the area with water and checked to ensure embers did not spread to other areas around the building, fire department officials said.”

Firemen had the fire under control within five minutes, department officials said. Damage to the structure is estimated at $200.
