The Kane County State's Attorney's Office said it had not yet been determined whether a law enforcement officer's shot killed the man.

BATAVIA, IL — A 39-year-old man died Saturday in Batavia after firing a firearm at police officers, who fired back, authorities said. Police initially said the man was 28, but clarified on Sunday morning that he was 39.

The man's name was not released Saturday night by the Kane County State's Attorney's Office, which is investigating the incident.

The incident happened about 4 p.m. on the 1200 block of E. Wilson St. in Batavia, authorities said, and Batavia police and Kane County Sheriff's officers responded, the state's attorney's office said in a statement.

"Preliminary investigative findings indicate that the man was armed with a firearm and fired at officers," the statement said, and the officers fired their weapons.

"It has not yet been determined whether any of the rounds fired by law enforcement struck the suspect or contributed to his death," the state's attorney's office said.

The statement did not say what led up to the shooting or why police and the sheriff's office were at the site.

The Kane County Major Crimes Task Force is investigating, the state's attorney's office said, and after the investigation is completed, the reports will be turned over to the state’s attorney’s office for review, the statement said.

"We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased," the Kane County sheriff's Office and State's Attorney's Office said in a joint statement Sunday. "Any loss of life is a tragedy, and our thoughts are with those grieving during this difficult time. The investigation remains ongoing. Additional information will be released as it becomes available."
