2 Dogs Fall Through Ice, Get Rescued By Bolingbrook Firefighters

BOLINGBROOK, IL — The Bolingbrook Fire Department rescued two dogs who broke through the ice and fell into a pond Sunday morning, according to Lt. Chris Brophy.

Firefighters were dispatched at 7:33 a.m. to the pond north of 777 Falconridge Way after a resident reported seeing the dogs fall through. The first crews arrived at the scene and found the dogs around 40 feet out in the pond, and unable to get themselves out of the water, Brophy said.

"Members of the fire department donned a cold-water rescue suit, and immediately went onto the ice to rescue the two dogs," he said. "One dog was removed with a rescue rope. The second dog was struggling to remain afloat, and was carried out of the water by one of our firefighters. Both dogs were removed from the water in less than 10 minutes after our first crew arrived."

The two dogs were warmed by the firefighters, and Bolingbrook police transported them to an emergency veterinary clinic for evaluation and treatment. Brophy said there were no tags on the dogs' collars, and no owner was there to claim the dogs.

The names of the owners, and current condition of the dogs were not known by the Bolingbrook Fire Department as of Monday afternoon.

All members of the Bolingbrook Fire Department perform annual training in ice rescue techniques, and it was this training, Brophy said, that allowed the firefighters to safely and rapidly rescue the dogs.
