2 Lanes Of I-55 Bridge In Bolingbrook Still Closed For Repairs: IDOT

Officials were hoping to have the lanes of the bridge near I-355 and Illinois 53 open but cold temperatures have slowed the repairs.

BOLINGBROOK, IL — Two lanes of an Interstate 55 bridge remain closed on Wednesday as repairs being made to the expressway are taking longer than expected, the Illinois Department of Transportation said.

Officials said that the right two lanes of the I-55 bridge over Illinois 53 just west of I-355 remain closed as the concrete patch that was put down on Tuesday is gaining strength, but at a much slower pace than officials hoped due to cold temperatures.

Traffic officials said that they are exploring all options and hope to have the two lanes of traffic open as soon as possible, IDOT officials announced on Wednesday.

While the necessary repairs have been made to the bridge deck, IDOT officials said that additional time is needed for the concrete to set and gain sufficient strength before the lanes can be reopened to traffic. A concrete mix with an accelerated cure time was used, but low temperatures slow down concrete curing.

The left lane of the bridge and the ramps will remain open. IDOT officials had anticipated that all lanes would be reopened Tuesday night.

IDO officials said that this section of the roadway is approaching the end of its useful lifespan and is currently being reconstructed. The project includes a new bridge deck and is anticipated to be completed later this fall.

Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on alert for workers and equipment.
