The 31-year-old woman was in a relationship with Edward Allen, 33, and the two were involved in an argument before the shooting incident, Columbus said.

"Allen punched and kicked the victim, and she fled the residence. As she ran, she turned around and saw Allen armed with a handgun," he said. "Allen fired one round at the victim, striking her in the hand. Allen ran from the scene prior to officers arrival."

Allen was seen running into an area business in the 400 block of Bolingbrook Drive, from where he was taken into custody. The firearm was located inside the business, police said.

He was transported to the Will County Adult Detention Facility and charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm, aggravated battery with a firearm, unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, illegal possession of ammunition, and two counts of domestic battery.

The victim had also filed a case of misdemeanor domestic battery against Allen on Sept. 8, as per court records. He was charged with pushing and striking her.

The judge had ordered Allen not to have contact with her as a condition of his bond, court records show. The woman petitioned for a protective order against Allen on May 19 stating that he was harassing her, and had physically harmed her.
