Bolingbrook Sales Tax Receipts Up in 2012

The village of Bolingbrook officials said it's a sign "many of the businesses in Bolingbrook are doing better."

An increase in sales tax receipts indicates Bolingbrook businesses are doing better, according to village officials.

The Bolingbrook village board approved tax receipts this month showing a 6.6 percent increase from November 2011 to November 2012, according to the Chicago Tribune

Those are signs people are spending their money more and businesses are doing better, officials said.

Village officials expect an overall 6 to 9 percent increase in sales tax receipts from 2011 to 2012, according to the Trib

Retail sales and sales tax revenue were both reported up in Q1 2012 from Q1 2011, according to village documents. Bolingbrook saw a 6 percent increase in retail sales from Q1 2011 to Q1 2012 and a 5.5 percent increase in sales tax revenue in that same time period.

Bolingbrook also had a slight increase in retail vacancy in 2012. 

At the 2012 State of the Village address, Claar expressed his concern about the future of retail.

"America is taking a hit," Claar said. "People have to understand that every time they buy online they put the nail in the coffin of the brick and mortar stores." 

Claar said the success of the Promenade Bolingbrook has buffered the loss of other businesses, including major chains such as Circuit City and Borders.
