Bolingbrook Shoppers -- Watch Out for Added Credit Card 'Checkout Fee'

As of Sunday, shoppers paying with a credit card may be charged a new 4 percent added "checkout fee." The fee is legal in 40 states. Illinois is among them. 

The fee is the result of a settlement between announced last summer between credit card companies and major banks to "fix credit card processing fees with merchants." 

Retailers can now charge credit card users 1.5 percent to 4 percent of their total bill to cover processing costs to credit card companies.
