Everyone Plays Important Role In School Safety
Leroy Brown, Valley View School District safety coordinator, discusses what school officials can do to help keep their campuses safer.

We want all parents and community members to be aware of the current safety protocols and procedures in place for our school district.
Our district's first priority is protecting all students and school personnel. We work with local police, local fire departments and emergency responders to keep our schools safe. Because there is no absolute guarantee that violence or an emergency will never occur, we have many safety measures already in place in our district to prevent such events, including:
- School safety drills (fire, lockdown, severe weather, and bus evacuation) practiced throughout the school year.
- Limited access to school buildings (a designated entrance with all other doors locked).
- Monitoring and supervision of student common areas such as cafeterias, playgrounds and hallways.
- Monitoring of school visitors. All visitors must report to main office, sign in and wear visitor badges.
- Presence of school resource officers (SROs) and/ or security guards.
- Presence of security systems (video monitoring and/or exit door alarm systems).
- Crisis plans with crisis team preparedness training, including annual review of plans and drills. Each school has a building level crisis team.
- Schoolwide behavioral expectations, positive interventions and supports, and counseling services.
- School-community based partnerships (including, but not limited to, Safety Committee, Community Leaders Working Group and chambers of commerce).
- Anonymous reporting systems available to students (hot lines, suggestion boxes and "tell an adult" approach).
Our district continues to work diligently to provide a safe learning environment for all of our students and a safe environment in general for our staff, parents and community. Everyone, especially students, can play an important role in helping to promote school safety by following procedures and reporting any unusual behavior.
