Firefighters Serve as Role Models in the Station, Classroom

A pair of Bolingbrook firefighters have spend more than a year volunteering their time to the Valley View School District by reading to students at Wood View Elementary. They even volunteer on their days off.

Firefighters are a natural role model for kids, but especially so for students of Wood View Elementary these days.

That's because Alex Davis and Jimmy Chau, both firefighters in the Bolingbrook Fire Department, log nearly as many hours volunteering at the Bolingbrook school as they do extinguishing blazing fires.

Both have spent countless hours working as reading volunteers over the year and have played a huge role in students' development.

"They have dedicated themselves to an active role in helping our students and staff by supporting, promoting and encouraging reading," said Tiffany Russell, assistant principal at Wood View. "We've been fortunate to have these two men become a valued part of our students' education."

Both Davis and Chau have been volunteering at the school for more than a year as part of their already rigorous workday.

But that wasn't enough. In fact, the pair became so attached to lending a helping hand that they began volunteering on their days off.

"We do this because we want to make a difference," Davis said. "The smiles on these kids faces are worth it."
