Police: Man Charged with DUI After Causing 5-Car Crash, Flipping Van

Police said Jesus Garcia, 19, was fleeing a burglary when he caused a five-vehicle crash and flipped the van he was driving at the intersection of Route 53 and Remington Boulevard.

A  man has been charged with aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol in connection with causing a five-vehicle crash after fleeing the scene of a vehicle burglary, according to police reports.

Police said Jesus Garcia, 19, was breaking into a vehicle at about 12:30 p.m. Friday in the lot outside , 348 S. Bolingbrook Drive, when the vehicle’s alarm went off.

According to police, Garcia then jumped into his Ford Windstar and fled toward the intersection of Route 53 and Remington Boulevard, where he caused a five-vehicle crash and flipped the van he was driving.

Garcia then crawled out the van and fled on foot, police said.

Garcia was found hiding in a dumpster behind Aldi Foods, according to reports. He was taken into custody and positively identified.

Police said open alcohol and the in-dash navigation system stolen during the initial vehicle burglary were found in the van.

Garcia was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital with head injuries. He was released from the hospital Sunday and and is being held in the Will County Adult Detention Facility on charges of burglary to a motor vehicle, aggravated DUI, no valid driver’s license, no insurance and open alcohol.

Police said Garcia was the only one injured in the crash.
