Public Invited to Police Memorial Event

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. Currently, tens of thousands of law enforcement officers from around the world converge on Washington, D.C., to participate in a number of planned events which honor those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

In that spirit and in conjunction with National Police Week, the Will County Sheriff's Office, Joliet Police Department, Illinois State Police and area municipal police departments will present a moving ceremony dedicated to area officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty. 

The ceremony will start with a memorial Mass at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 10, at St. Mary Magdalene Church, 201 S. Briggs St., in Joliet. Following the Mass, a procession will take place to the Will County Courthouse where the law enforcement memorial monument stands on the north lawn. 

The Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony will take place at Noon. 

The ceremony is open to the public.  All are welcome.
