Students Walk It Out, Raise Money for School

It's no secret that most children have a hard time sitting still for an extended period of time—especially when that time is spent in school with beautiful weather.

Administrators at St. Dominic School figured they might as well make some money while letting their students walk off that energy.

St. Dominic School held its 8th Annual Walk-a-Thon Thursday, an event designed to raise money for a worthy cause while letting kids run or walk out their unending energy.

"It's good, clean fun for the kids to get out here and walk around for a couple hours and burn off some calories," said the event's chairwoman and school board member Michele Rogers. "It's a great event for our school's families and parish families to see how active and involved our kids are."

The annual walk is the school's second largest fundraiser of the year.

Rogers said the event raised a bit more than $3,000 last year and this year's goal was to get to $6,000.

In year's past, the money has gone to make capital improvements on the school and to St. Dominic's sister school in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina hit.

This year, the money is going to buy equipment and materials for recess and physical education classes.

"Those items are in need of being replaced," Rogers said. "We need new games, new footballs, soccer nets—different things for sports activities."
