Much-Anticipated Chinese Restaurant, MAK, Finally Opens in Wicker Park

The day is finally here. After more than a year of planning, Modern Asian Kitchen, known as "MAK" has officially opened its doors.

Just when you're about to say "it's about time" regarding the opening of Division Street's newest restaurant, MAK, consider reminding yourself of the other common idiom, "better late than never."

The new Wicker Park Chinese venture finally opened Friday night—just in time for Do Division street festival goers—at 1924 W. Division St., owners announced.

Initially expected to open in late February, the eatery is founded by second-generation Chinese-American, Tommy Wang, who was "tired of hearing friends complain that there's no good Chinese food in Chicago," Patch reported last month.

Wang has described MAK's cuisine as health-conscious, casual dishes includng Chinese wraps, quinoa bowls and some Japanese and Korean-influenced meals.

Chefs have dreamed up vegan and gluten free options, too, according to posts on Facebook.

"By keeping our menu small and focused, we are able to work closely with our vendors to source local, all-natural ingredients that are better for you, better for the economy and better for the environment," one announcement says.

The restaurant was closed to the public on Monday to allow staff to make a few improvements to service, employees said.

It will open Tuesday to serve a meal to Facebook fans and resume regular 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. business hours on Thursday.
