Documents Confirm Rumors of Nike Coming to Damen Avenue
Rumors of Nike coming to a Damen Avenue building have finally been confirmed as fact.
Rumors of a Nike store landing in Bucktown have been circulating since February.
But as of Thursday, the local athletic gear and shoe retailer is no longer a theory. It's a fact.
Nike plans a 5,432-square-foot store at 1640 N. Damen Ave., the former home of popular watering hole, Cans Bar & Canteen, according a Chicago Real Estate Daily story, which cites documents posted to construction bidding service BidClerk.com.
"The firm plans a 'Nike Factory Store,' with a single sales floor and a lower-level space for storage and an employee break area, the documents show," the story says. "Nike hopes to start work on the outlet by July 15."
The store follows the opening of the "women's only" center, Nike Training Club, which came to Armitage Avenue in nearby Lincoln Park at the end of January.
Real Estate Investor Newcastle Limited purchased the building on Jan. 11 for more than $3 million, according to the Cook County Recorder of Deeds.
The 83-year-old structure is one block from the Milwaukee, North and Damen avenues intersection.
