Volunteer Deputies Needed in Lake County

Volunteers are needed to serve in the Lake County Sheriff’s Office reserve deputy unit.

The reserve deputy unit is made up of volunteers who assist the sheriff’s office in times of natural and man-made emergencies. The unit works directly under the direction of the highway patrol division and also assists municipal police agencies. 

Reserve deputies can be called upon to provide traffic and crowd control, search for missing persons, and participate in crime scene evidence searches. They have assisted at events such as the Lake County Fair, Vernon Hills Summer Celebration, Libertyville Days and Shop with the Sheriff. 

A reserve deputy attends a 120-hour training course over a five-month period. Classes are held one weeknight each week and up to two Saturdays a month. Classroom and hands on instruction are required. 

Reserve deputies must be at least 21 years old, a U.S. citizen, a Lake County resident and have a high school diploma or equivalent. Candidates must be of good moral character and be in good health with the ability to stand for long periods of time.
