BURR RIDGE, IL – Sixteen vehicles – 14 of them pickup trucks – were burglarized early one morning in September in Burr Ridge.

Most of the Sept. 19 break-ins were at local hotels, three of which do not have cameras in their lots, according to police reports.

In most cases, the trucks' rear passenger or driver side windows were smashed. A vehicle was stolen and used to commit a series of car burglaries afterward, police said. It was later recovered.

The burglaries were at Chicago Marriott Southwest, Hampton Inn, Crowne Plaza and Extended Stay America. The first three lack parking lot cameras, the reports said. Police said they have no video evidence.

Other vehicles were burglarized at the Village Center shopping complex. One break-in was reported at a distance, on South Madison Street, but that may have been separate because it also involved a burglary of a building.

The pickups were Fords, Dodges, GMCs and Toyotas.

The reports indicated some items were stolen. In one case, a wallet was found on the ground near a burglarized truck, but the owner said nothing was stolen from it, police said.

Burr Ridge officers found some of the burglarized vehicles after they started patrolling hotels following break-in reports at Red Roof Inn in Willowbrook.

Detective Robert Wisch encouraged residents to lock their cards and not leave their valuables within plain sight.

"Residents, in particular, are reminded not to leave garage door remotes in plain view within vehicles that are parked outside," Wisch said in an email to Patch. "We have experienced burglars entering unlocked vehicles in residential areas and using garage door remotes to gain access to the residents’ garages where they commit additional burglaries/vehicle thefts."
