Burr Ridge Needs More Cameras To Combat Crime: Official

'Big Brother' concerns take back seat to safety and security, the mayor said.

BURR RIDGE, IL – A Burr Ridge trustee on Monday called for more license plate reader cameras in town.

"I've been a proponent of (license plate reader cameras) and putting more of those on high-traffic corners," Trustee Schiappa said at a Village Board meeting. "I just want criminals to know when you enter Burr Ridge, we will know about it."

Mayor Gary Grasso agreed.

"There was a time when we didn't want the so-called Big Brother around all the time, but obviously now it becomes more and more important for safety and security," he said.

In 2020, the cameras became the subject of a debate between Grasso and a trustee.

The license plate reader cameras make law enforcement more effective. Many police departments input the license plate numbers of suspects' cars, so officers are immediately alerted when the vehicles pass the cameras.
