Jimmy Stewart Movie Kicks Off Films at Library

Jimmy Stewart is the idealistic new senator Jefferson Smith who goes to Washington and finds corruption and disillusionment in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. The 1939 movie will be shown free at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 20 at the Indian Prairie Public Library. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

This is part of the library’s ongoing Movies and More series, which promotes discussion following a movie. Library staff members lead the discussion. During the spring, group participants entered their favorite actors into a drawing; the library selected movies starring those actors to be shown during the summer. All films will be shown at the library, 401 Plainfield Rd., Darien.

The other winning stars are Audrey Hepburn, Joseph Cotton and Meryl Streep.

The movies are:

Charade starring Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn. It will be shown at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 3. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. In this stylish movie, the mysterious Peter Joshua played by Cary Grant, protects a young widow, played by Audrey Hepburn, from crooks in pursuit of her late husband’s ill-gotten gains.

Out of Africa starring Meryl Streep and Robert Redford. Doors open at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 5 and the movie will be shown at 1:30 p.m. This story, set in the breathtaking landscape of 20th century colonial Kenya, centers on Danish writer Karin Blixen, played by Meryl Streep, as she accompanies her husband to Africa where she falls in love with an exciting adventurer, Denys Finch-Hatton, portrayed by Robert Redford.

Shadow of a Doubt, directed by Alfred Hitchcock and starring Teresa Wright and Joseph Cotton will be shown at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 17. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. This dark dramatic story follows a young Charlotte, played by TeresaWright, as she discovers that her beloved Uncle Charlie, portrayed by Joseph Cottton, isn’t what he seems.
