Burr Ridge Closer To Getting ZIP Code: Official

BURR RIDGE, IL – Burr Ridge is trying a new way to get its own ZIP code, and a top official says the village is making progress.

Now Burr Ridge shares its code with Willowbrook – 60527.

The village has been working on getting its own ZIP code for at least a couple of decades.

"I would say that with internet shopping and internet sales, it's even more important than it was 20 years ago," Mayor Gary Grasso said at Monday's Village Board meeting.

From 2015 to 2017, the village failed in its appeals to get the U.S. Postal Service to assign the village its own code. Because of that, Burr Ridge must wait until 2027 to make a new request.

These days, Burr Ridge is working with towns across the country to get their own codes. The village belongs to the National ZIP Code Advocacy Coalition, which has 80 members and represents a population of 4 million.

The group is aiming to get Congress to pass a law requiring the post office to give the member towns their own codes.

"Congress says get it to 100 (towns), and we'll get it done," Village Administrator Evan Walter said.

Last year, the measure passed the House, but not the Senate. Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert of Colorado is leading the House effort.

"I feel like we're finally getting there," Walter said. "It takes the speed of government to get things done, but I feel confident we're actually going to do it."

Trustees adopted a resolution calling for a unique ZIP code.

The lack of such a code, the resolution said, means a loss of business because customers fail to find companies, misdelivered mail, misdirected payment of local taxes and poor address identification for first responders.
