BURR RIDGE, IL – Burr Ridge trustees this week approved spending $450,000 for "100 percent" camera coverage of the Village Center.

The license plate-reading cameras would also provide "substantial" coverage of neighboring Life Time Fitness and monitor traffic flow on Lincolnshire Drive, the village said.

The money is coming from a 1 percent sales tax imposed in a 3-year-old business district that includes Village Center, County Line Square and the Marriott.

Under the plan, the village will add 17 new cameras and recalibrate two existing ones. The Village Center has agreed to contribute $50,000 to the project, officials said.

Village Administrator Evan Walter said Burr Ridge was also working to get cameras at County Line Square.

"They are on the way. They are interested," he said.

Mayor Gary Grasso said the cameras make sense.

"People feel safer with the cameras around," he said.

In a memo, the village said it did not have the authority to use the cameras to surveil the general public or issue automatic tickets for speeding and other traffic violations.
