About 3 a.m. on Christmas Eve, Burr Ridge police were called to the Extended Stay America hotel at 15W122 S. Frontage Road for a disturbance, DuPage County prosecutors said in a news release.

A man who was hiding behind the front desk told officers that someone had been stabbed or stabbed himself, police said.

Officers went to Room 345 and spoke with Villareal, who was standing in the hallway with his hands covered in blood, police said.

Officers said they found a man on an inflatable bed with several stab wounds in the upper chest and torso. The man was taken to the hospital immediately.

Police said Villareal and two others, including the victim and the man hiding behind the front desk, were sharing a hotel room to celebrate Christmas Eve.

Villareal harassed the victim as he slept, police said. When the third man left the room to take a phone call, Villareal stabbed the victim with a knife with a 4½-inch blade, prosecutors said.

"I want to commend the quick actions of the witness who reported the incident and the officers who responded immediately, took the suspect into custody, and rendered lifesaving aid to the victim," Burr Ridge Police Chief Marc Loftus said in the news release.
