I Get Headaches. Should I Go to an Eye Doctor or Neurologist?

Today's 'Ask the Expert' question is being answered by Dr. Shuchi Patel, Ophthalmologist at Loyola Center for Health at Burr Ridge.

Reader question: I have been having serious headaches since I
started my new job, which requires a lot of data entry. Some people tell me it's stress-related. Others say that it could be eye strain, but my aunt had a
stroke when she was my age. I don't want to take any risks with my health,
but my health insurance doesn't kick in for another month. Rather than going to both an eye doctor and neurologist, is there one doctor I can go that will be able to tell me what's wrong with me?

Answer: Headaches are the most difficult symptom to diagnose and cure since a myriad of conditions can cause headaches. Getting an eye exam can be a start, but cannot guarantee that a cause or solution can be found from the eye alone. The reassuring news is that a headache is not usually related to a stroke and so unlikely that your symptoms are an indication of that.
